I Came Across His Old 1975 Ford Chateau Club Van. It Has Some Cosmetic
Work and Lots Of Small Bits In and Out That I Need To Get To.
But Hey... It's a Cool 70's Potential Shag Van😉
I Like It... and Feel Motivated 🤘
When I Got It, It Wasn't Shifting Correctly, First Shift Came Early and Second and Third Took A While and Where Inconsistent.
Found Out That The Vacuum Hose To The Transmission Vacuum Modulator Was Diconnected... So Put That Back On.
It Shifts Okay Now But Maybe A Bit To Quick,
So I Think I Have To Crawl Under It Again To See If It's a Adjustable Modulator... If So, I'll Try...
With a Flat Blade Screw Driver You Can Turn The Screw On The Inside of the Modulator... End Clockwise = To Raise the Shift Points and Also Will Firm Up the Shifts. Turn the Screw Counter Clockwise To Lower The Shift Points, This Will Also Soften the Shifts.
Found Out That The Ignition Was Set on The A Cylinder Exhaust Stroke
Instead Of The Compression Stroke. So Took The Ditributor Out,
Set the TDC Mark on The Ballancer and Put Cylinder One On TDC
(Using my Home Made Sparkplug Wishle... Method)
Then Pointed The Rotor To Cylinder One and Put The SparkPlug Wires Back On Counter Clockwise: 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 As Its a 351 Ford Engine.
Put On My Timing Light and Set It On About 8 to 12 Advance
As It's Running On Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
It Now Starts Right Up & Purs Like a Kitten 👍
Shag van? You ol' hound dog you. 😉 I wonder if you'll be removing the side windows to make it sealed sides? Your knowledge of things automotive is spot on. Your diagnosis of troubleshooting is very when well over half the car nuts out there don't know shit from shinola, including myself sad to day. But it looks like a cool project. 👍 Keep us posted. Now I don't think that's the trany out of the van you are showing us, as it's achevy 350 or 400 THM. Just a side note on that. I see this one is painted. I was informed by my mechanic that you never paint an automatic transmission case as it need to breath for cooling. Did you know about this?
ReplyDeleteThanks JS ;-) I think (for now) Im keeping the side windows as is... 4 of them can be opened (safari?) the rear ones not. Started on the body work / spots this week and plans are adding an extra exhaust as I dont like the one piece exhaust sound and I think it would run just a bit more nice with that ad, also. Your 2 times right on the tranny, its a pic of the web (GMtrans indeed) just for pointing out the vacuum thing, and painting the housing could hold extra heat and is in my up only a "look" thing thats unnessesary anyway ;-)
