Mopar Monday - 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda

One of the Most Memorable Hot Rods (By Jason Mueller)

It is no doubt that the 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda is one of the most sought after muscle cars back in the day and even more nowadays.  The muscular Barracuda Sport Coupe offered an $872 option to upgrade to the Hemi, the original sticker price in 1970 was $3,164.  The Cuda come with a stock a 383, 385 horsepower V-8 engine but that wasn’t enough for many.  Today the cars will sell upwards of $160,000- $360,000 and up.  A lucky collector from the east coast has the first ragtop that came off the assembly line, estimators have put a hefty 5 million dollar market value on the car.

The truth is that not many sold in that era because the insurance companies did not like the fact that the car could do zero to sixty in 5.8 seconds and complete the quarter mile in 14.1 seconds running 103 miles per hour.

Only 652 Hemi Cuda hardtops hit the factory floor and just 14 convertibles were sold in the USA and 3 in Canada plus one sent overseas.  It is no doubt why this beauty is worth so much today.
Back in the day you drove the car off the lot and around the block showing it off but today it's collectors usually contact a car shipping service to bring it from car show to show, consistently winning trophies. The 426 cubic inch engine produced 425 horsepower at 5000 RPM and 490 foot pounds of torque at 4000 RPM.

  1. Simply awesome. So sad to see this giant in the industry die and fade away. The '70 Plymouth 'Cuda has some what become the American version of the '62 Ferrari GT 250 Testa Rosa. Some what.
